By admin at Mon, 2006-05-29 12:32 It is quite a huge setback when your power supply conks off. Nowadays the PC has become almost a family member. When we lose control over our computers, it is great cause for concern. How will we chat with our friends? How will we research that project that is due tomorrow? What about all those important and vital files? A power failure may cause the loss of important files stored only on your computer. Because everything from journal entries to the monthly budget is commonly stored on computers, it is comforting to know that your files will be safe. The best way to strengthen safety of files is to have a backup power supply. Don’t worry. There are many ways to ensure that your precious computer stays safe and healthy. There are signs to keep an eye out for and steps you can take to keep your files safe. You can prevent this tragedy by always paying close, and careful, attention to your power supply. The power supply is an extremely important unit of your computer. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most neglected components as well. Because of this, it is incident prone since almost no-one pays attention to it till it fails. Your power supply cannot be taken for granted. Ensure that it is as healthy and happy as the rest of your system. Before you come to the conclusion that your power supply has failed, ensure that it is connected properly and set to the correct voltage. A PC that has recently been moved or is moved frequently might have this problem. If the voltage selection has changed and you still try to use your power supply, you may blow a fuse. If the voltage selection has been altered, you must first unplug the power supply and then adjust the voltage selection. The first sign of a failing power supply is its failure to turn on promptly. This obvious sign may be intermittent in the beginning but eventually it becomes permanent. If you press the power button and the PC does not come on, then you may have an issue on hand. Of course, it could be for some other reasons that the power supply refuses to power up. There are a lot of other reasons for a power supply to lie dormant. Many of these can be easily rectified. So don’t immediately run out to buy a new power supply until you are absolutely sure that the old one is useless. You don’t need a technician to detect some of the signs that your power supply is its way out, but you will have to pay attention to your PC. If the fans aren’t turning, or if your system temperature is as high as hot as a summer day in Florida, you most certainly have a problem. If the fans are extremely noisy, check whether anything is obstructing them, for example a piece of paper. If all is clear and the noise still persists, your power supply could be the culprit. A hot system could mean that the power supply is slowly to roasting your system. This is not only extremely dangerous for your PC, it is dangerous for you as well. Spontaneous reboots and lock ups are also warning signs. If your system, even occasionally, decides to shut down of its own free will, the power supply may be the cause. A system that freezes up is also a sign of the same problem. These are usually defensive mechanisms on the part of your motherboard. An old AT power supply immensely increases your chances of a power failure. How will you know if you have an AT power supply? It can be recognized by a heavy cord that feeds into a big switch on the front of the case and has four connections. This power supply comes with a potentially fatal live line voltage at the switch. There are some ways to test your system and find out whether your power supply is the root cause of your problem. None of these tests require you to do anything too technical. Unplug all your peripherals and switch on your system. If it works properly, then it is probably one of your accessories that is causing the problem. |
